Tragic South Bay Crash Kills One in South Bay, Florida (FL)

May 11, 2020

SOUTH BAY, FL- writes that one person died in a crash that took place in South Bay this week. The incident occurred in the evening when a 23-year-old man from Belle Glade was traveling westbound on State Road 80 when he left the westbound lanes, crossed the grass median, and entered oncoming traffic. The young man’s sedan collided head-on with an SUV that was traveling eastbound.*

The impact caused the sedan to overturn, and the driver was ejected. Responders arrived on the scene and transported the man and the 64-year-old woman driving the SUV to the St. Mary’s Medical Center. The man died a short while later in the hospital. The woman is reportedly in serious condition from the injuries she suffered in the wreck.

It is not clear why the victim drifted over the median leading to the deadly incident.

The crash report does not provide any names of those involved, nor did it describe the make or model of the vehicles or whether any of the individuals involved are suspected of using drugs or alcohol. The lack of information marks a change from the Florida Highway Patrol’s former policy when it comes to disclosing information about car accidents.

The state’s constitution was amended with a law intended to protect the victims of crimes. Pursuant to the law, police will not release identifying information about people involved in car crashes.

So far, in 2020, 937 people died in car crashes in Florida, while another 64,102 people suffered injuries in wrecks in the state. Last year, 3,210 people died in crashes in the Sunshine State, while more than 254,000 people sustained injuries.
