Interstate 95 Backed Up After Crash Blocks Four Traffic Lanes in West Palm Beach, Florida (FL)

May 11, 2020

WEST PALM BEACH, FL- writes that a collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 close to Belvedere Road this week. The morning wreck led to all four northbound lanes being blocked. First responders were on-site, and drivers in the area were warned to use caution on the interstate and to find alternate routes.*

Interstate 95 has a dangerous reputation, and some studies indicate that the region around Miami-Dade is the most hazardous stretch of the road. Numbers from 2015 showed that the Miami-Dade portion of Interstate 95 suffered more fatal crashes than any other stretch of the interstate. The risk of fatal crashes on Interstate 95 was determined to be eight times higher than the average for all interstates. Of course, many locals are not shocked by the high number of crashes on the interstate. South Florida’s roads are notoriously dangerous and routinely make the lists of most dangerous places in the nation to drive.

When it comes to why Interstate 95 is so hazardous, it appears that the poorly maintained express lanes are partially at fault. One particularly deadly incident occurred when five people were fatally struck while standing on the shoulder of the road. The shoulder, which is next to the express lane is a narrow strip of space.

Officials in the state often argue that the roads are not the problem, but that drivers are to blame. Distracted and aggressive driving are often mentioned as causes for the high number of wrecks. Frequent construction and congestion are also issues on the interstate, which may be contributing to the dangers. Some officials point out that people lack patience, and frequent congestion and long waits negatively impact driver behavior.
