One Severely Injured in a Collision in Sarasota, Florida (FL)

May 11, 2020

SARASOTA, FL- writes that a collision in Sarasota, Florida left one victim suffering life-threatening injuries this week. The crash occurred in the afternoon at the intersection of South Tamiami Trail and Bahia Vista. The details regarding how the crash took place are not available at this time.*

The incident led to the closure of a section of South Tamiami Trail. Motorists in the area were diverted away from the intersection while crews worked at the scene.

The Sarasota Police Department is carrying out the investigation into the collision. No identifying information regarding the victim was released, but reports indicate that the person is being treated at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Intersections are dangerous because they are a place where vehicles moving in different directions cross paths. There are often also pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users in these areas making the chances of something going wrong even higher. Some studies indicate that around 40 percent of all crashes occur at intersections, and more than one in every five traffic fatalities happens at these locations.

The high number of crashes reported at intersections has led to some safety advocates arguing that roundabouts should be used instead of traditional intersections. Studies indicate that the number of wrecks drops significantly when a roundabout is used instead of a traditional intersection. Overall, crashes drop 37 percent when roundabouts are used. Injury crashes drop by 75 percent, and fatal incidents decline by an impressive 90 percent when a roundabout is used rather than a traditional intersection. Even pedestrian collisions drop by 40 percent with roundabouts making this design a much safer option for all road users.
