Tragic Glades County Crash Kills Worker in Moore Haven, Florida (FL)

May 11, 2020

MOORE HAVEN, FL- writes that an incident in Moore Haven left one person dead this week. The tragic crash occurred in the early afternoon when a 21-year-old driver was traveling south on State Road 78. The victim was on a “ride on” piece of equipment that applies road reflectors. The “ride on” vehicle was in one of the southbound lanes, and the driver struck the victim and the equipment. The motorist also collided with a guardrail before coming to a stop.*

The victim died at the site of the crash. Police are still investigating the incident.

Traffic collisions kill tens of thousands of people in the United States every year. In the past few years, the nation has experienced a slight decline in these deaths. In 2018, the year-end total was 2.4 percent lower than the number of people killed in traffic crashes in 2017. In 2019, the estimates based on the first six months indicate that the number of deaths continued on a downward trend with a projected 1.06 percent drop in traffic fatalities.

In 2018, the number of children killed in car crashes dropped by more than ten percent. Fatal drunk driving crashes declined 3.6 percent, and speed-related fatal collisions dropped 5.7 percent. Motorcycle fatalities also decreased by 4.7 percent.

While many improvements were seen, pedestrian deaths, cyclist fatalities, and deaths caused by crashes involving large trucks were all higher in 2018 than in 2017.

It appears that much of the improvement has come in the form of newer technology in vehicles. New models of cars are being designed with advanced safety features that appear to be successfully reducing some types of crashes and related injuries.
