May 08, 2020

SPRINGFIELD, FL- writes that a crash left an infant in critical condition this week in Springfield. The incident also left four others with severe injuries.*

The crash occurred in the evening at the intersection of Transmitter Road and East 3rd Street. The child, identified as an eighteen-month-old boy, was rushed to a hospital in Pensacola, where his condition was described as critical. Police who responded to the call stated that the child was not responsive. The child, an eleven-year-old boy, and a 47-year-old man were all transported to the hospital via EMS. A nineteen-year-old woman and a five-month-old infant were also hospitalized following the wreck.

Reports did not provide details about how the crash took place but stated that further information would become available as the investigation unfolds. Investigators are requesting that any witnesses to the crash or people with information regarding the incident contact the police. Those with information can contact Crime Stoppers if they choose to remain anonymous.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of deadly car crashes dropped in 2018 by about 2.4 percent as compared to 2017. Data collected through the Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that deaths of children ages fourteen and under dropped by more than ten percent. Other areas that saw significant declines included drunk driving crashes, which dropped by 3.6 percent, fatal speed-related wrecks, which declined 5.7 percent, and motorcycle fatalities, which declined by 4.7 percent.

A spokesperson at the NHTSA stated that newer vehicles are being designed to be safer than older models. The increasingly safe designs are helping lower the number of people killed in collisions each year.
