Two Motorcyclists Injured in Clearwater, Florida (FL)

May 04, 2020

CLEARWATER, FL- writes that a collision took place close to the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport this week that involved two motorcyclists. Officers are now searching for a driver who may have been responsible for causing the two bikes to crash.*

The incident occurred in the late evening close to the intersection of 49th Street North and Roosevelt Boulevard in Clearwater. The two victims, identified as a 24-year-old man from Brandon, and a 28-year-old man from Tampa, were both injured in the incident. Reports indicate that the men both had helmets on at the time of the wreck. The men were traveling southbound on 49th Street North in the center and inside lanes. As the victims approached the intersection, a car appears to have entered their path as it changed lanes. The riders tried to avoid impact with the other vehicle, and both lost control of their bikes.

Updated reports on the condition of the two men indicate that they are both in serious condition and remain in the hospital.

Police are searching for the other vehicle, which they believe contributed to the crash. The driver did not remain at the scene, and investigators are requesting that any witnesses or individuals with information about the incident or the driver who fled the site of the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

Motorcyclists face greater risks than people in passenger vehicles. The number of motorcyclists who died in 2018 represented a drop from the previous year, and yet these road users were still over-represented when it comes to deadly crashes in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that all motorcyclists use helmets and take steps to make themselves more visible to other drivers.
