Recent reports found that Jacksonville, Florida ranks fairly low when it comes to deadly speed-related collisions. The review was based on data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and found that when it comes to deadly speed-related incidents, Jacksonville came in 110th place out of a total of 111 cities.

Each year, around 10,000 people are killed in automobile wrecks that are caused by speeding drivers. In total, this accounts for around 30 percent of motor vehicle fatalities. The Midwest and the Southeast seem to be the locations where speeding causes the largest number of collisions.

Speeding has been causing fewer deadly accidents in recent years than it had in the past. Deaths caused by speeding drivers dropped by about 34 percent between 2005 and 2017. Teen drivers are also less likely to speed now than in 2005, although they are still more likely to speed and cause deadly crashes than other demographics. In 2005, speeding caused 4.2 deaths per 100,000 people. By 2017, the number dropped to 2.7 per 100,000 people. Crash deaths among teens that were caused by speeding in 2017 were 5.8 per 100,000, demonstrating a significant decline from 13.2 in 2005.

In Florida, officials are working to develop safer streets. The North Florida Transportation Planning Organization is trying to design a transportation network that will be safe for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
