Intersection Accident Leads to Four Hospitalized in Jacksonville, Florida (FL)
JACKSONVILLE, FL- News4jax.com writes that four people, including a police officer, suffered injuries in a crash that took place this week in Jacksonville. The incident occurred at the intersection of Ribault Drive and Soutel Drive.*
Reports indicate that the crash happened while the officer was traveling westbound on Soutel Drive in the later evening. The other involved vehicle was turning left off of Soutel onto Ribault at the time. The collision injured the officer and all three people in the other vehicle. Responders transported all of the victims to the hospital for treatment. The crash is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit.
For several years, UPS drivers have been taking paths that avoid making left turns. Only in rare situations will the drivers turn left, and instead, the delivery drivers use programs that find the most efficient routes. Left turns lead to about 22.2 percent of crashes. Compared to right turns, which cause about 1.2 percent of collisions, the risks of turning left become pretty clear. In places where drivers travel on the right side of the road, left turns require motorists to cross the path of oncoming vehicles. This situation creates the risk of severe wrecks.
Not only do left turns put people in vehicles in danger, but they are dangerous for pedestrians too. Some studies indicate that pedestrians are about three times as likely to be killed by a left-turning car than one making a right turn. In addition to the safety risks, left turns are also inefficient and waste time and fuel. Motorists may benefit from driving more like UPS drivers and avoiding most left turns.
