Tragic Three Vehicle Collision Kills One in Marion County, Florida (FL)

April 28, 2020

MARION COUNTY, FL- writes that a woman was killed in a Marion County car crash that involved three vehicles. The incident, which occurred in the early evening, also severely injured a man.*

The victim was identified as a 58-year-old woman from Grand Island. Reports indicate a 1999 Toyota Celica was driving eastbound on State Road 40 when he drifted to the left into the westbound lanes of traffic. The Celica struck a 2017 Freightliner causing that vehicle to then veer over the center line and into the eastbound lanes of traffic. The Freightliner crashed into the front left side of the victim’s Ford Fusion. The 32-year-old man driving the truck was severely injured in the collision. Responders transported the injured man to the Ocala Regional Medical Center. Police are still carrying out the accident investigation but stated that charges might be filed in relation to the crash.

Crashes involving large trucks are often devastating because of the massive size of these vehicles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety writes that large trucks can weigh between twenty or 30 times what passenger vehicles weigh. As a result, a crash involving a truck and a passenger vehicle will often end up causing more damage to the smaller vehicle. Out of the 4,136 people killed in crashes involving large trucks in the United States in 2018, 67 percent were people in passenger vehicles, while fifteen percent of victims being motorcyclists, pedestrians, or cyclists. Only sixteen percent were people traveling in large trucks. When looking at deadly two-vehicle wrecks involving large trucks and passenger vehicles, the victims were people in the passenger vehicles 96 percent of the time.
