Florida Teen Dies in Tragic Crash While Biking
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL- Nbcmiami.com writes that a teen in Doral was struck by a car while riding a bike at the intersection of Northwest 107th Avenue and Northwest 74th Street in the evening. Police reports stated that the driver of the vehicle was a 70-year-old man who remained on the scene of the crash.*
The incident took place close to a CVS Pharmacy. The Miami-Dade Police are still conducting the investigation, which is being carried out by the Traffic Homicide department. The victim was a member of the Doral Soccer Club. Doral police officers offered condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Sadly, Florida has a poor track record when it comes to cyclist safety. According to some reports, the state is the worst in the nation when it comes to deadly bike versus car crashes. In 2017, these tragic incidents killed almost 800 people.
According to the AAA, two of the main causes of these wrecks are poor lighting and failure to yield. The owner of a bike shop lamented that many of the cities in Florida are not accommodating to cyclists. While the cities are failing to provide the infrastructure necessary to protect cyclists, there are many people who are commuting by using bikes. Locals often complain that drivers neglect to follow laws designed to protect cyclists.
Some cyclists in the state say that there is a need for a safe place for cyclists to ride. Without dedicated lanes for cyclists, people on bikes are forced to share the road with cars, often with tragic results. The state also has a poor record when it comes to pedestrian safety.
