Tragic Crash on Interstate 95 Kills One in Jacksonville, Florida (FL)

April 28, 2020

JACKSONVILLE, FL- writes that a deadly collision occurred on Interstate 95 this week. The wreck took place close to the Fuller Warren Bridge during the early afternoon.*

Police reports indicate that a 23-year-old woman was traveling in an exit lane and began to slow her Saturn down. It is not clear why the driver was slowing as she approached the US-90/Phillips Highway exit. A Chevrolet Tahoe was driving directly behind the Saturn and did not slow when the Saturn reduced its speed. The Tahoe collided with the rear of the Saturn, and vehicles both began to spin as a result of the impact. The vehicles were left blocking the southbound traffic lanes. The woman driving the Saturn died from the injuries she suffered in the incident, and a passenger in that vehicle was injured. The driver of the Tahoe also suffered injuries in the crash. Police are still investigating the wreck but stated that charges are currently pending.

According to safety experts, it is crucial to maintain enough space between your vehicle and others on the road when driving. Motorists who do not keep at least a three-second window between their vehicle and another vehicle put themselves at risk of being in a crash. In order to determine the safe three-second distance, drivers should choose a fixed object, and count three seconds between the car in front of the passing that object, and their vehicle passing the same object. On wet or slick roads, it is important to increase the distance even more, as stopping will require more time in these conditions.

This stopping distance guideline considers the reaction time of the driver and the braking distance.
