Driver Causes Tragic Crash in Jasper and Flees Scene in Jasper, Florida (FL)
JASPER, FL- Wtxl.com writes that a man is now facing charges for causing a fatal collision in Jasper, Florida, this week. The motorist was traveling on Interstate 75 and heading northbound in the late evening when the incident occurred.*
The suspect was in a 2013 Kia Sorrento when he struck the back of a 2001 Ford F-150. The impact caused the driver in the pickup truck to lose control of his vehicle, and the Ford overturned on the side of the road, coming to a stop in a ditch. The couple in the pickup truck, identified as a 54-year-old man who was driving the vehicle and a 64-year-old woman who was a passenger, both died in the incident.
Rather than stopping or contacting emergency services, the man in the Kia continued to drive away from the scene. Police were able to locate the driver on State Road 6 when he came to a stop at a gas station.
The suspect suffered injuries in the collision as well and was treated in the hospital before being taken into custody for fleeing the scene of a deadly crash.
Officers believe that the hit-and-run motorist was drunk at the time of the incident. The investigation is still ongoing.
Hit-and-run crashes are fairly common in the Sunshine State. According to troopers, there is an "epidemic" of fleeing drivers in Florida. Motorists in the state reportedly leave the scene of around 25 to 40 collisions every day. Sadly, many of the drivers who commit these crimes are never apprehended. Police ask that anyone who witnesses a crash contact law enforcement. Drivers who are involved in crashes should ask witnesses what they saw, if possible.
