Brightline Train Strikes Car in Tragic Fatal Crash in Pompano Beach, Florida

March 24, 2020

POMPANO BEACH, FL- writes that a train struck a car in Pompano Beach, causing at least one death. The train involved is owned by the Brightline railroad. Footage of the site shows that the train collided with the passenger side of the car, causing severe damage to the vehicle. The identity of the person who died in the incident has not yet been released. *

Brightline is a fairly new rail line that operates trains that reach speeds of almost 80 miles per hour. The service runs through heavily populated parts of southern Florida. In a short few years, the company has earned the title of deadliest rail line in the nation. Records indicate that Brightline trains killed an average of at least one person every month since they began service, leading to dozens of deaths.

When viewed as average death per mile, the rail service has one fatality per every 29,000 miles of train travel. The average for trains in the United States is about one death per every 100,000 miles. The railroad line used by Brightline also runs freight trains. The freight service has a fatality rate of just one death per 160,000 miles of travel. The freight trains are far slower than the Brightline locomotives. The tracks are largely unfenced in, and some of the crossings do not fully close off when trains are approaching.

While the high number of deaths is a disturbing trend for many in the state, the company claims the reason for the high number of fatal crashes is that most of the victims are using its trains to commit suicide. The numbers posted by Brightline have been questioned, and families of many victims believe that the deaths were accidental and not suicides. Critics of the rail service claim that Brightline must take steps to improve safety and reduce the number of fatalities.
