When it comes to hit-and-run crashes, Florida has one of the highest amounts per capita out of all fifty states. Florida ranks third in the nation based on a study that covered the incidents from 2006 through 2016. Nationally, at the time of the study, 2016 was the deadliest year on record for hit-and-run collisions. The number of drivers who fled the scene of crashes rose by 60 percent between 2009 and 2016.
The two states that outranked Florida included New Mexico and Louisiana. In the most severe hit-and-run crashes, the victims tend to be either pedestrians or cyclists. A representative from the AAA stated that every driver is responsible for remaining at the scene of an accident following a collision. Fleeing the scene will cause the suspect to face harsher legal consequences, even if the driver was not at fault for the collision.
