Garbage Truck Crash Tragically Kills One in Bradenton, Florida

March 24, 2020

BRADENTON, FL- Bradenton.com writes that an employee of the Public Works and Utilities Department died in an accident this week. The incident involved a front-end loader garbage vehicle. Reports indicate that the person was a long-time employee at the department of public works. The identity of the person has not yet been released. Police are still investigating the incident. *

The high number of deaths associated with solid waste vehicles is unacceptable. While waste collection job safety is increasing, the numbers indicate that these workers are often in dangerous situations while on the job.

One of the reasons that workers are better protected now than in the past is that some of the more dangerous aspects of the job have been eliminated by technology. Many trucks that required workers to manually load waste are now automated either fully or at least partially. This one improvement eliminates the need for the workers to get on and off of the trucks, to lift heavy objects, and to have to try to avoid other vehicles that are passing the trucks.

The waste companies have also implemented safety plans and regulations aimed at lowering the number of injury-causing or fatal accidents. The employers have a clear motivation in doing so not only for the benefit of their employees but also as a way to lower the cost of workers' compensation claims and lawsuits.

Sadly, while there have been lower numbers of injuries among these workers, the rate of deadly accidents has remained relatively stable. In addition to workers being killed in these incidents, the waste industry often is involved in crashes that injure or kill other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
