Driver Swerves Killing Woman and Injuring Child in Tallahassee, Florida

March 24, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, FL- writes that a driver struck and killed a 45-year-old woman as she was pushing a stroller. The child in the stroller was injured in the collision.*

Reports indicate that the victim was walking on a sidewalk when the car swerved off the road and struck her and the child. The woman died at the scene of the crash, and responders transported the child to the hospital. Police stated that the driver, who was traveling westbound at the time, swerved because he believed it was necessary to avoid an imminent collision.

A witness near the scene stated that he heard the sound of the impact. He said he rushed to the front of his shop and saw the victim on the ground. The man stated that the driver was screaming and saying that he had swerved because another car cut him off. According to the witness, collisions near the area of the tragic accident are common, and there is no traffic signal at the intersection. He stated that he fears for his own family because the area is dangerous. Police are continuing to investigate the crash and requested that anyone with information call the Traffic Homicide Unit.

Pedestrians are dying in large numbers throughout the country. According to a recent report, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes recently reached a 30-year high. SUVs are commonly blamed for the increase because they are more likely to cause severe injuries than smaller vehicles. Smartphones also take much of the blame as they cause a distraction for drivers and for pedestrians. The weather also could be playing a role as warmer temperatures could be encouraging people to be out walking more often.
