Three Killed in Tragic Crash in Fort Meyers Beach, Florida

March 24, 2020

FORT MEYERS BEACH, FL- writes that three people died in a crash in Fort Meyers Beach this week. The incident took place on San Carlos Boulevard in the morning.*

According to reports, the crash occurred when a 2017 Lexus was traveling north and crossed the center median, where it struck a 2004 Jeep traveling in the opposite direction. The southbound Jeep overturned in the wreck. The two people in the Lexus included a 53-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, both of whom died in the crash. The couple was from Arizona.  The woman driving the Jeep, who was identified as a 33-year-old Fort Meyers Beach resident, also died in the wreck.

Traffic was diverted while troopers worked on the investigation and cleared the scene. Images from the location of the collision show the Jeep resting on its side next to the mangled Lexus. The Insurance Information Institute (III) writes that deadly car crashes increased in 2018 as compared to 2017 in the state of Florida. In 2017, 3,116 people died in car crashes in the Sunshine State, while in 2018, 3,133 people lost their lives. The slight rise in fatalities is disturbing for Florida because overall, the number of vehicle deaths dropped nationally between 2017 and 2018. Nationally, head-on collisions led to 3,471 deaths or just over ten percent of the total number of individuals killed in vehicle crashes.

When it comes to fatal collisions, the III states that speeding is the most likely cause of these tragic incidents, followed by drug or alcohol intoxication. Distracted driving, which largely involves motorists looking at their phones, also contributes to many automobile-related deaths.
