A Pedestrian Crash Took Place on Sunshine Boulevard

March 19, 2020

LEHIGH, FL- writes that a pedestrian collision took place on Sunshine Boulevard in Lehigh Acres this week. The incident occurred at the intersection with 3rd Street West. The pedestrian suffered injuries in the crash, and responders transported the person to the hospital.*

The status of the person is not known at this time. The road was blocked off, and drivers were directed away from the site of the wreck.

More pedestrians are killed in crashes in Florida than in any other state. According to a professor of urban and regional planning, the Sunshine State’s roads were made to prevent road congestion and to allow cars to travel at high rates of speed. The Florida Atlantic University professor states that the roads often lack access for bikes and pedestrians.

The state has been criticized for being too car-centric. The roads are designed with large lanes, high-speed limits, and often lack sidewalks. Many now look at the roads and see that the infrastructure itself is a problem and that it increases the risk of bad driving practices like red-light running and speeding. Modern thinking on road design is that drivers will make mistakes, and the roads must take human error into account.

Culturally, there is a shift in thinking when it comes to road design. Even people who have been working in Florida’s transportation industry for many years are changing the way that they talk about transportation planning. However, changing the infrastructure in a nation built for cars will take time and resources. While new technology is coming to the automobile industry at a rapid pace, some people say that human behaviors still need to change in order to better protect pedestrians. We cannot rely on technology to serve as a complete solution.
