Crash in Miami Gardens Tragically Kills One and Injures Eight at Church

March 19, 2020

MIAMI GARDENS, FL- writes that a driver struck a church group while they were providing food and aid to individuals in need. The motorist reportedly suffered a medical emergency while waiting to pick up food and backed into the church members.*

The victim was a woman who became trapped under the vehicle. Three other individuals were transported to the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s North Trauma Center. Four of the injured victims are in critical condition. Witnesses to the crash stated that the driver was operating a Mitsubishi SUV and lost control of the vehicle. The church members were shocked by how something so horrible could happen. The group serves food to homeless people once a week. They state that they serve about 300 families in the area. Following the tragic incident, reporters filmed a hole in the wall from where the SUV crashed into a building. The identities of the woman killed, and the injured individuals have not been released. The condition and identity of the driver are not known. Reports state that it is believed that the person suffered a stroke while operating the car.

Medical emergencies are a relatively uncommon cause of car crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), only a little more than one percent of crashes included in their survey were the result of a driver suffering from a medical emergency. The survey also found that most of the motorists involved in such collisions were aware of the medical problem that led to the crash before the incident occurred. The most common emergencies suffered by drivers included blackouts, seizures, and diabetic reactions.
