Uber Driver Under the Influence in Tragic Crash that Killed Passenger in Florida

March 21, 2020

ORLANDO, FL- writes that an Uber driver is now facing charges in connection to a deadly collision that took place in Haines City. Police have been investigating the crash for two months and have now arrested the 27-year-old driver from Orlando.*

The incident occurred when the driver was traveling on US 17 and struck a stopped tractor-trailer at the intersection with Shamrock Drive. The driver’s passenger, a 30-year-old man, struck his head in the wreck and died at the scene.

Police stated that the driver picked up the passenger from unincorporated Haines City and was traveling to a drop off location on Uncle Pete Road. The driver in the semi-truck was looking for the address where he was supposed to drop off his truckload when the car struck him from behind.

In a drug test after the crash, the police found that the man driving the Uber had taken methamphetamine and the drug was also located in the vehicle.

The police stated that rideshare companies are useful when it comes to getting people home safely after drinking, or in providing transportation to those who do not have a license. Passengers who use these services should be able to trust that the drivers are sober, competent, and alert. The actions of the impaired driver in this collision led to tragic results.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that there are many substances that will impair a motorist’s ability to drive. Methamphetamine, in particular, tends to cause drivers to be more reckless and aggressive behind the wheel. It is important to note that drivers are often not able to assess their own level of impairment, making it dangerous to drive after using any amount of a substance.
