Two Killed Including Nine-Year-Old in Tragic Polk County Crash

March 21, 2020

POLK COUNTY, FL- writes that a crash occurred on US 17/92 close to Bates Road. The incident occurred late in the evening over the weekend. Police reports indicate that a 59-year-old man driving a Kia Sorento was speeding when it struck the rear-end of a Ford Escape. The collision caused the drivers of both vehicles to lose control, and the Kia crossed the centerline of the roadway, where it struck a Toyota 4Runner that was driving in the opposite direction.*

The man driving the Kia was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene. The child victim was in the 4Runner. Responders rushed the nine-year-old to the hospital, but the juvenile later died. Three others were injured in the collision, including one person who is still in critical condition.

The early investigation indicates that speed was a factor leading to the crash, but it is not yet clear whether distraction or alcohol consumption led to the incident. No charges are anticipated in connection with the crash.

The wreck led to the roadway being shut down for several hours while police investigated and cleared the debris.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding led to 9,378 fatalities in 2018. When drivers speed, they put themselves and everyone else on the road at risk. These individuals are more likely to lose control of their cars and are not able to stop as quickly in an emergency. Drivers who are speeding also reduce the effectiveness of the safety features in their cars. Collisions that involve speeding vehicles will involve more severe impacts leading to a greater risk of injuries and deaths.
