Tragic Crash Kills Nine-Year-Old and One Other in Polk County

March 21, 2020

HAINES CITY, FL- writes that a collision killed a man and a nine-year-old girl in Polk County this week. The three-vehicle wreck occurred on US 17/92 close to Bates Road in the late evening.*

According to witness statements and evidence at the site, the police reports indicate that a 59-year-old man was driving at a high rate of speed heading northbound in a Kia Sorrento. The Kia rear-ended a northbound 2015 Ford Escape driven by a 60-year-old man. Both of the drivers lost control of their vehicles. The Escape crashed off the side of the roadway, and the Kia entered oncoming traffic where it collided head-on with a 1998 Toyota 4Runner. The two cars struck at a high rate of speed, head-on but at a slight angle.

The impact caused the Kia to rotate, and the driver, who was not restrained, was ejected from the vehicle. The driver and the two children in the 4Runner all had their seatbelts on at the time of the incident. The nine-year-old and an eleven-year-old were both flown to the hospital. The nine-year-old child died shortly after arriving. Reports indicate that the driver, the 34-year-old mother of the children, is in critical condition. The older child is expected to survive.

The driver in the Kia is suspected of traveling at an excessive speed and possibly of impairment, although test results are still pending.

The wreck led to the closure of the roadway for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.

Police stated that the deceased driver in the Kia is believed to have been at fault and that, therefore, no charges are likely to be filed in relation to the horrific crash.
