Collision Reported in Crawfordville Road, Tallahassee, Florida

March 21, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, FL- writes that traffic delays were reported on Crawfordville Road following an accident that caused injuries. The incident occurred in the early morning close to the intersection with Trice Road.*

According to police, the northbound lanes were shut down to accommodate rescue workers and cleanup crews. Reports confirmed that people were injured in the crash, but did not state the nature or extent of those injuries. The cause of the crash and the number of involved vehicles is not yet known.

Florida's roadways are considered some of the most dangerous in the country. The state is working on a Complete Streets program, which is intended to improve roadway safety. Currently, the stank takes first place in fatal pedestrian collisions, deadly cycling crashes, and comes in third when it comes to deadly hit-and-run wrecks. Florida is also one of the worst states when it comes to highway safety laws.

Under the Complete Streets initiative, any road designs must consider the safety of all road users. The focus on vulnerable road users is particularly important as many pedestrians are dying in the United States, and in Florida specifically. While pedestrian deaths are a nationwide problem, the fact that Florida's rates are higher than anywhere else indicates that there are problems specific to that state's infrastructure. In the Sunshine State, many roads are built for speed. Fast-moving cars and unsafe crosswalks, or too few crosswalks could be adding to the many universal risks faced by walkers.

SUVs and smartphones are also driving the high number of deadly pedestrian crashes. Larger average vehicle size comes with a higher risk of crashes leading to deadly injuries, and smartphones are a distraction to drivers and walkers alike.
