Multi-Vehicle Wreck on Interstate 75 was Caused When a Tire Blew Out on a Concrete Mixer

March 21, 2020

SARASOTA, FL- writes that a concrete mixer blew out a tire while driving on Interstate 75 this week. The driver lost control of the massive vehicle when the front left tire broke in the late morning close to the Fruitvale Road exit. The trucker, a 60-year-old man from Bradenton, was traveling in the right lane when the incident occurred.*

The truck drifted across two northbound lanes of traffic before striking a steel cable barrier in the median and entering the southbound lanes. The truck collided with a 2004 Pontiac Vibe with a 37-year-old driver. The concrete mixer then overturned and ended up on its right side.

A 2019 Toyota 4Runner then collided with the bottom of the truck. A driver in a 2020 Toyota Camry tried to swerve to avoid striking the truck and collided with a steel barrier.

The truck driver and the woman in Pontiac were both severely injured in the wreck. Responders rushed both of the injured people to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The collision is still under investigation. The authorities closed down the southbound lanes for around four hours while crews worked to determine the cause of the collision and to clear the wreckage. Concrete mix spilled onto the roadway complicating the cleanup operation. Traffic delays were significant as only one northbound lane remained open for some time after the incident. All northbound lanes reopened within about 90 minutes of the accident.

The images from the scene show the overturned truck and the 4Runner, which had collided with the underside of the larger vehicle. Reports did not indicate whether charges are likely to be filed in connection to the collision.
