Driver Arrested Following Collision with Cyclist in Tampa, Florida

March 11, 2020

TAMPA, FL- writes that a driver struck and killed a cyclist this week and fled the scene of the crash. Police now filed charges against the 22-year-old motorist.*

The incident occurred when the suspect’s 2016 Jeep Wrangler was driving eastbound on West Gray Street at its intersection with North Gomez Avenue. The man collided with a cyclist who was also riding eastbound and was on the shoulder of the roadway. Reports indicate that the victim died at the scene.

Police have not released the name of the victim because of Marcy’s Law, which does not permit the release of a victim name in a crime unless the family gives permission to do so.

After striking the man, the driver left the scene without rendering aid or reporting the crash. About 50 minutes after the incident, the man returned to the scene and identified himself as the motorist who struck the victim, and officers were able to match debris from the scene with his vehicle.

Reports indicate that the suspect smelled of alcohol and had other signs of alcohol impairment when he arrived on the scene, including slurred speech, glassy eyes, and body tremors. Police administered a field sobriety test which the driver did not perform successfully.

The official report is redacted but seems to describe an admission from the suspect. The results of an alcohol and drug urine test are still pending, but in preliminary tests, the results were positive for drugs in addition to alcohol.

The charges include fleeing the scene of a crash resulting in death and a DUI charge for driving back to the scene impaired. The suspect attends the University of Tampa and lives about one mile from the site of the crash.
