Car Fatally Strikes Principal of School in West Park in Tragic Pedestrian Incident

March 11, 2020

BROWARD COUNTY, FL- writes that a man was struck and killed this week in the mid-afternoon at the intersection of Southwest 40th Avenue and West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Family members and friends were at the scene and positively identified the victim.*

A friend of the Principal stated that the death was a tragic loss for the community because the victim worked to mentor and support youths in the community. Both roads were closed following the crash. Police are still investigating the cause of the incident. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred.

Across the United States, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes is increasing every year. Last year the number of deaths was estimated to be greater than at any time since 1988. There are many reasons for the rising number of fatal pedestrian crashes, including the larger size of the average car and distractions resulting from smartphones. While these challenges are faced in all parts of the country, Florida, in particular, has a higher rate of pedestrian deaths than any of the other states. Clearly, something about Florida makes the Sunshine State more hazardous for people who are walking.

Many believe that the issue is Florida’s infrastructure, which is designed to facilitate speeding cars on multi-lane roads. The traffic safety laws in the state have also been criticized as not being robust enough to encourage safer driving practices. Like many other parts of the country, Florida is working to improve safety. Several counties are working on Vision Zero programs in an effort to combat the high number of traffic deaths.
