Driver Wanted for Fatal Crash in St. Johns County, Florida

March 11, 2020

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL- writes that a driver who killed three people has been eluding police since 2002, but was spotted in St. Augustine this week. The driver, who would be 45 years old now, has been living on the run ever since the crash, which occurred in Orlando.*

The suspect is on the list of Florida Highway Patrol’s most wanted fugitives. At the time of the tragic collision, the suspect was traveling at speeds of up to 97 miles per hour on the road with a 45 mile an hour speed limit. He struck a car that was not moving at the time and killed all three people in the vehicle. Police say that he was intoxicated at the time as well. The Florida Highway Patrol and the US Marshal Fugitive Task Force are both searching for the driver. Around the same time last year, the man was spotted at a library in St. Augustine.

The ongoing search indicates how seriously law enforcement officers take vehicle-related crimes. The state has a high number of hit-and-runs every year, and the numbers are continuing to grow annually. Florida ranks third when it comes to deadly hit-and-runs. The state reminds drivers that fleeing the scene is against the law and that those who do so will be pursued indefinitely.

Fleeing the scene will often result in lengthy prison sentences, especially in collisions, where a person is killed. Drivers who flee the scene are often drunk and fear the consequences of a resulting DUI charge. Sadly, many of these drivers manage to evade police officers. Witnesses are crucial when it comes to identifying suspects.
