Pedestrian Bridge Designs Considered For US 192 in Kissimmee, Florida

March 11, 2020

KISSIMMEE, FL- writes that a pedestrian bridge may be coming to the Old Town district in Kissimmee. The bridge would be constructed between Seralago Boulevard and International Drive. On one side of the roadway, there are attractions such as gift shops and other recreational sites including the Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf and Fun Spot are located on the other side of the street.*

Few crosswalks are in place to help pedestrians get from one side of the heavily trafficked road to the other. Some tourists from Missouri called the set up crazy and dangerous. The man stated that he is shocked to see how many people across the highway’s six lanes outside of crosswalks. A woman stated that she is always concerned to see people crossing, especially when they are with children.

One local says he must cross the road every day to get to and from work. He said he worries about his safety crossing the many busy lanes.

An engineering firm was consulted to find a way to make the road less hazardous. Even during their time reviewing the road and looking for solutions, a fatal pedestrian incident occurred. The firm stated that a pedestrian bridge is the best way to prevent future tragedies. As for location, the firm stated that many of the incidents occur on the segment of road between Seralago Boulevard and International Drive, making this area a good place to focus any safety improvement efforts. There is currently no crosswalk at Florida Plaza Boulevard, and the suggested plan states that this would be a favorable place to install the bridge.

The firm presented four separate designs ranging in costs from seven to twelve million dollars. The project has not been approved and is still in the planning phase.
