March 15, 2020

BROWARD COUNTY, FL- The writes that a driver is now facing charges relating to a deadly collision that killed two people on a scooter. The incident took place in the middle of the night when the scooter and the motorist were traveling westbound on Northeast 48th Street.*

When police arrived, the driver, who remained at the scene of the collision, informed police that he failed to see the people on the scooter. The man operating the scooter, a 53-year-old from Deerfield Beach, died within three days of the crash. The passenger, a 48-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, passed away within an hour of the collision. The driver, identified as a 37-year-old man, is facing several charges for the fatal wreck. Police charged the motorist with DUI causing death, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and DUI with property damage. The man was booked this week.

According to police, the driver and a passenger in the car did not suffer injuries in the collision, but the motorist appeared to show signs of alcohol impairment. A blood test found that the driver had a blood-alcohol level of .16 percent alcohol per volume. The legal limit in Florida is .08 percent blood alcohol per volume, which is half the level of the driver when he rear-ended the scooter.

After obtaining a warrant to search the Chevrolet and its monitoring system, officers found that the car was traveling at 110 miles per hour before striking the victims. The speed limit on Northeast 48th Street at the site of the crash is just 40 miles per hour. Currently, the suspect is being held without bond.
