Pedestrian Dies in Hit-and-Run Crash in Ocala, Florida

March 16, 2020

OCALA, FL- Wcjb.com writes that a hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian in Ocala. Police are still searching for the driver responsible for the tragic wreck. Reports indicate that the incident occurred at the intersection of Southwest 43rd Street and State Road 200.*

The victim was left lying in the roadway after the first impact, and a second vehicle then ran over the person. Officers say that based on debris from the fleeing driver’s car, they believe that they are searching for a gray 2010 Camaro.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact local law enforcement.

Florida struggles with high numbers of pedestrian crashes as well as some of the highest numbers of hit-and-run wrecks in the nation. The Sunshine State is number one when it comes to deadly pedestrian incidents, and ranks third in hit-and-run deaths. The high number of pedestrian crashes and the high number of hit-and-runs are likely correlated as the most likely victim in a fatal hit-and-run is a pedestrian. Drivers who strike someone who is traveling on foot often sustain minimal vehicular damage and are able to flee the scene in their cars.

Many of these incidents occur at night when few witnesses are around to provide identifying information about the driver involved in the collision. Sadly, many of these drivers do manage to evade justice because they leave little evidence behind.

When it comes to the motivating factors in hit-and-run crashes, most of these drivers flee because they are drunk or otherwise in violation of a traffic-related law. Motorists who flee the scene may be operating their vehicle without a valid driver’s license, or have a warrant out for their arrest.
