Trooper Hospitalized Following Severe Collision in Davie, Florida

March 16, 2020

DAVIE, FL- writes that responders transported the Florida Highway Patrol to the hospital following a serious crash in Davie.*

The police responded to the collision at the intersection of Griffin Road and University Drive in the afternoon this week. Cameras caught the police vehicle colliding with a white sports car. A black sedan also seems to have been involved in the wreck. Paramedics brought the officer to the Memorial Hospital Pembroke, where his condition is not currently known. Police have not stated whether the other individuals in the crash sustained injuries in the wreck. The roadway at the location of the bridge later shut down.

Florida is one of the most dangerous states when it comes to traffic accidents. The state’s traffic laws have been criticized for not preventing collisions. The Sunshine State was among the worst in the nation when it comes to traffic laws designed to protect motorists. According to a review of state laws, Florida is not doing enough to encourage people to use seatbelts. The law should be primary enforcement; meaning that officers can stop a driver for failing to use their seatbelt, even if they have not committed another offense. This law should extend to rear-seat passengers.

One of the laws the state was lacking until recently was a ban on texting. Texting and driving is now a primary offense, meaning the state has made progress and implemented one of the recommended safety regulations. Drivers are still allowed to use their phones for making calls, though. It is not clear whether the newly enacted legislation will help lower the number of crashes. It does seem to be a step in the right direction.
