Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Employer Arrested for DUI Following Crash

March 16, 2020

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL- writes that an administrator with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office was recently arrested for driving under the influence after a car accident that took place over the weekend.*

The incident occurred on Tampa Road in Oldsmar when the driver, a 54-year-old woman, reportedly swerved to avoid a collision and entered oncoming traffic. The westbound driver struck another vehicle, but other driver managed to swerve and sideswipe the vehicle rather than colliding head-on.

After arriving on the scene, police found that the 54-year-old Sheriff’s Office administrator was exhibiting multiple signs of inebriation. Reports state that the woman smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and had trouble keeping her balance. A test determined that her blood alcohol content was somewhere between .238 - .243, which means it was around three times the legal limit.

The driver was arrested and subsequently fired from her position with the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say that the termination is required by the department’s policies.

Drunk drivers cause somewhere around 29 percent of all deadly collisions in the United States. Greater than 10,000 people die every year in collisions caused by drunk drivers. Even at levels below the .08 blood alcohol level, which is the legal limit in Florida, alcohol can impair a person’s ability to safely operate an automobile. At .05 percent, the person’s ability to focus is affected, and their judgment and alertness decline. Drivers who plan to imbibe alcohol should always develop a safe plan for getting home. Designated drivers, cabs, and rideshares are all options, and ideally, the person should make his or her plans prior to drinking.
