Woman Dies in Crash on North Davis Highway Escambia County, Florida

March 10, 2020

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FL- writes that a woman died in a crash in Escambia County earlier this week. The incident took place on the North Davis Highway in the evening. The victim was reportedly pulling onto the road out of a private driveway when her vehicle was hit by another motorist.*

The other vehicle struck the driver’s side of the victim’s car and killed her at the scene. The victim was traveling with her fiancé, who survived the crash, but suffered injuries. Responders transported the injured man to the Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment.

Reports identified the victim as a 32-year-old woman from Cantonment. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision. The people in the other car were not transported to the hospital, and the report notes that the driver and passenger in the other car both had their seat belts on at the time of the crash.

Side-impact crashes are dangerous because many of a vehicle’s safety features are better suited for protecting people in the event of front or rear-end crashes. The crumple zone on the front of a car will absorb much of the impact, therefore, protecting the occupants from taking those forces. In a side-impact crash, the victims will not have the protective features and will often be sitting close to the place where the cars make contact. Side airbags do help reduce the risk of dying in one of these crashes by about 37 percent. In an SUV, the risk of dying is about 52 percent lower in cars with side airbags. These features help by protecting the person’s head. While they are not mandated as a required safety feature, they do come in most new vehicles sold in the United States.
