Tragic Crash in Levy County Kills One

March 10, 2020

LEVY COUNTY, FL- writes that a three-vehicle collision killed a woman on US 129 at its intersection with County Road 345. The victim was identified as a 32-year-old woman from Bell.*

The incident took place in the evening this week. Three other people sustained injuries in the accident. Reports did not include information regarding how the collision occurred.

Florida’s roads are considered some of the deadliest in the nation. Drivers in the state are often not surprised to learn that Florida’s roads are so hazardous as they see the risks on a daily basis. The design of the state’s roads is a part of the problem. There are many lanes and high-speed limits that encourage motorists to travel at high rates of speed.

Florida’s laws are another part of the issue. The state has ranked among the worst in the country when it comes to highway safety laws. The laws that are considered include whether the state requires all occupants in a vehicle to wear their seat belt, and laws designed to prevent distracted driving.

Only recently, Florida added to its ban on texting and driving. Many other states had already entered bans on handheld electronic devices before Florida began to address the severe risks of distracted driving.

Because of the dangers involved in driving a car in Florida, the roads are not only hazardous for people in vehicles, but for pedestrians and cyclists as well. Pedestrian and cyclist fatalities are higher in the Sunshine State than in any other part of the country. Efforts to improve road safety in Florida will require infrastructure changes, legislative changes, and law enforcement and education efforts.
