Hit-and-Run Driver Kills One in Tragic Pedestrian Crash

March 04, 2020

DUVAL COUNTY, FL- writes that a driver struck and killed a pedestrian on Beach Boulevard and then fled the scene of the wreck. The incident occurred near Interstate 295.*

The victim was walking southbound and attempting to cross the westbound traffic lanes in the evening when a white Toyota Tundra struck him. The driver then continued to head westbound without stopping to render aid or report the crash. Police are checking the area to find surveillance cameras that may be able to provide more information about the suspect driver and the vehicle. Officers are requesting that anyone who has information about the suspect, or the pickup truck involved in the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

Reports indicate that since 2015, there have been 49 fatal hit-and-run crashes in Duval County. Some locals were surprised at the high number of fatal hit-and-run incidents. This week’s tragic wreck is the first of its kind for 2020. Last year, ten people died in hit-and-runs in Duval. Only one of the involved drivers was arrested that year. Out of the 49 fatalities that occurred since 2015, only thirteen people have been arrested in connection to those crashes.

Pedestrians in the area of the incident say that they often do not feel safe walking on Beach Boulevard and that it is not uncommon for drivers to fail to stop even when people are crossing at marked crosswalks.

Officials in Jacksonville say that they are dedicated to making the city safer for pedestrians. Improvements will include flashing lights at pedestrian crossings, better signage and pavement markings to help alert drivers of the need to slow down and stop for people crossing the street.
