Woman Dies in Tragic Car Crash in Jacksonville, Florida

March 02, 2020

JACKSONVILLE, FL- writes that a woman was killed in a wreck this week on Interstate 295, The victim was traveling northbound in the interstate in a 2015 Nissan Altima and heading towards Duval Road in the early afternoon.*

A semi-truck in front of the Nissan slowed down while entering a construction zone. The 30-year-old woman in the Nissan did not slow and crashed into the rear of the truck. Reports indicate that the front of the Nissan became wedged beneath the truck. The woman died in a wreck.

The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the tragic collision.

Underriding crashes are an extremely deadly type of accident that occurs when a car becomes wedged under the trailer of a truck. These large vehicles are higher off of the ground than are cars, and as a result, there is space in which the front part of a car- the part that is designed to absorb impact, slides beneath the trailer causing the occupants in the vehicle to be struck with the force of the impact. In many cases, the people in the car are decapitated in these horrible and violent crashes.

Large trucks are intended to have rails that prevent cars from underriding in the event of an impact. However, some studies indicate that many of the rails used on the rear of trucks are inadequate and do not work as intended. Additionally, underriding crashes also involve cars crashing into the side of a trailer, and currently, large trucks do not have rails on their sides to prevent these crashes. Many safety advocates argue that trucks should be required to have such features.
