Lakeland Installs High-Intensity Crosswalks on Memorial Boulevard

March 05, 2020

LAKELAND, FL- Lakeland has installed new crosswalks on Memorial Boulevard, according to ABCACTIONNEWS.COM. The signals, which are called “High-Intensity Activated Crosswalks,” or HAWKS, are meant to protect pedestrians in an area considered one of the most hazardous in Polk County.*

The signals are located close to Morgan Avenue, Stella Avenue, Vermont Avenue, and Kettles Avenue. Before the signals became effective, they were kept in flash mode for several days to ensure that drivers were made aware of their presence.

When a pedestrian wishes to cross the road, they simply press the button, and the signal starts to flash yellow. The signal then changes to solid yellow, before finally turning red to indicate that drivers must stop and allow a pedestrian to cross. The crosswalk will then begin flashing red. Once the sign is flashing red, the driver may proceed as long as the intersection is clear from pedestrians. Once the sequence ends, the light will turn off until another person pushes the button.

Police officers will be stationed at the signals during their early days of operation in order to explain the HAWKS to people crossing the road.

The HAWK signals are not the only improvement to the roadway. The Florida Department of Transportation is working to make Memorial Boulevard safer for drivers as well. Concrete pavement repairs will be completed, the intersections and medians will be improved, and the streetlights will be upgrades. FDOT will also be working on completing repairs on the sidewalk.

Memorial Boulevard is just one of the many roadways in Florida that are considered dangerous. The state is attempting to improve road safety after recently being named the most dangerous place in the country for pedestrians.
