Southwest Florida Preparing for Self-Driving Cars
FLORIDA- Self-driving cars will be coming to Florida soon and that they will be changing the roads for everyone, according to WINKNEWS.COM. US 41 will be used to test autonomous vehicles.*
The Florida Department of Transportation reports that cars, emergency signals, school zones, and stoplights will all become part of an interconnected system. The system's goal is to maximize safety and to improve the flow of traffic. Drivers with automated features are already allowing vehicles to take over many aspects of driving. Motorists who use the technology say that it makes driving less stressful.
However, there are concerns as to how these self-driving vehicles will respond to red lights, or when cars need to merge. The cars will be using radar in proximity sensors and cameras to evaluate the roadway. It is important that road signs are clear, accurate, and consistent for the new technology. On US 41, officials will set up lights and crosswalks that are designed to work with these vehicles.
A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation communicated that one lane of traffic on the road can accommodate about 2,200 cars an hour. If the vehicles become part of an interconnected system, it could increase the capacity for traffic in each lane so that up to 4,000 vehicles per hour can travel through each lane.
Many believe that autonomous cars will be able to reduce the number of traffic crashes and save lives. In order to do so, officials will have to install the infrastructure needed to communicate effectively with new vehicle technology.
