Hit-and-Run Crashes in Florida Continue to Increase Each Year

February 25, 2020

GAINESVILLE, FL- writes that hit-and-run collisions are on the rise in the Sunshine State.  In 2019, Florida had 105,000 hit-and-run crashes. A teenage girl tragically died last October in a hit-and-run crash while walking home with her friends. The young victim’s family is now working to reduce hit-and-run deaths in the state.*

Sadly, many of these crashes end in tragedy and the numbers keep climbing year after year.  Police officers pointed to the incredible importance of witnesses in these incidents. Any detail that a person might have could help lead to the arrest of the driver and to some form of closure for a grieving family.  Even just a piece of paint found on the road is sometimes enough to point officers in the right direction. The driver who struck the young teen was apprehended just over a week after the deadly crash. In that case, it was a broken piece of a car mirror that helped investigators find the suspect.  The man is now awaiting his trial.

Florida has the third-highest number of deadly hit-and-run crashes in the country. These incidents are not only increasing in the Sunshine State but are also on the rise nationally.
