Car Seats Are Required by Law in Georgia For Children Under Eight

March 10, 2020

GA - Drivers in Georgia must understand that car seats for child safety are not optional, but legally required, according to NORTHWESTGEORGIANEWS.COM.  Georgia law requires children under the age of eight, the child being less than 57'' or 4' 9'' to ride in the backseat of a vehicle and either be in a booster seat or car seat, suitable for the child's height and weight.  In an editorial, a local columnist spoke about seeing a child riding past while standing in a vehicle completely unrestrained. Car seats are often criticized as being inconvenient, and older motorists and caregivers sometimes point out that they used to travel in cars without such features.*

While drivers may often find these seats a frustration, it is illegal to drive in the state with unrestrained children.

According to some, the reason for not using a car seat is that the child hates sitting in the restraints. Parents or caregivers may give up after the tantrums break their will to insist on the child riding in such a seat. It does not matter if the child screams the entire time they are in the seat. The driver is still responsible for keeping that child safe while in the car.

The second likely cause of children riding without their restraint is a lack of information. Car seats can be complicated, and the right arrangement changes as the child grows. It is important for caregivers to understand what seating arrangement is correct for their child’s age and size.  For caregivers or parents who are unable to afford a seat for their child, there are resources available. By contacting a local police department, drivers can find the organizations  who can provide seats to families in need.

Regardless of the cost or the inconvenience, car seats are required by law and are the best way to keep children safe while they are riding in vehicles.
