Police Near Florida State University Increasing Traffic Law Enforcement
TALLAHASSEE, FL- Wtxl.com writes that traffic enforcement is becoming a greater priority for officers in the Florida University area. The tragic death of a nineteen-year-old university student has increased awareness of the dangers pedestrians are facing in the city. Another student was also struck by a car while crossing the street near the site of the fatal accident, indicating that the incident was not an isolated occurrence.*
Police stated that the community has been working to improve safety for the students. New bike lanes, crosswalks, and signs are now in the area surrounding the campus, but clearly, the efforts are not enough. Officers will be getting in touch with the Florida Department of Transportation in order to discuss ways to make the university’s 42,000 students safer. Police say they will be aggressively patrolling for traffic violations in the city.
The fatal pedestrian incident occurred when the teen was crossing the road, and a driver ran through a red traffic signal. Following the girl’s tragic death, a fellow student began a petition requesting a pedestrian bridge or tunnel in the area to keep people safe when walking across the busy roadway. The petition has gained momentum, but some fear the solutions are too costly.
In 2019, reports indicate that there were 89 pedestrian incidents in the Tallahassee, seven of which resulted in death. One fatal hit-and-run crash took place in the city. In total, there were 1,044 hit-and-runs reported. A report published by Smart Growth America found that nine out of the twenty deadliest cities for pedestrians are in Florida. Florida is the deadliest state in the country for pedestrian crashes.
