Family Speaks Out After Fourteen-Year-Old Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Tampa, Florida
TAMPA, FL- Abcaction.com writes that a teenage girl died after a driver struck her, and then fled the scene. The fourteen-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital after the incident and remained in critical condition until she passed away from her injuries about two weeks after the crash.*
The driver, a 24-year-old woman, struck the girl who was walking with her friends at the time. The woman exited her vehicle, looked for damage on the car, and then left the scene. Another motorist traveling behind the woman stopped and attempted to help the injured girl. The motorist claimed that she was overwhelmed and had not understood that the object she had struck was a person. She got back into her vehicle and proceeded to her boyfriend’s home. The family says that the girl’s organs were donated, and the mother wanted to give hope to others in the wake of the tragedy. The girl’s mother expressed her extreme sadness over the incident, which she does not wish upon anyone. The driver worked for the Department of Children and Family Services. The Department fired the woman the day she was arrested. The driver is now facing charges for leaving the scene of a fatal crash- which is a first-degree felony offense.
Reports indicate that the intersection where the child was killed has had eighteen crashes since 2015. The family stated that the intersection itself is too dangerous and should be modified to protect pedestrians better. Another fatal pedestrian crash occurred there last spring. The County stated that the area is included in its complete streets project plans for 2020.
