Truck Driver Involved in Fatal Tesla Autopilot Crash Speaks Out

February 27, 2020

FLORIDA-  Statements made by a truck driver involved in a fatal crash with a Tesla driver last spring were published after the collision garnered a significant amount of media attention, according to ARSTECHNICA.COM. The Tesla driver tragically killed in the collision had activated the Autopilot feature in his Tesla before the incident.*

According to the data from Tesla, the Tesla driver activated Autopilot's traffic-aware cruise control feature 12.3 seconds before the fatal crash. He then activated Tesla's Autosteer feature 9.9 seconds before impact.

The trucker pulled out from a driveway, and the Tesla collided with the trailer shearing the roof from the vehicle and killing the Tesla driver. The trucker stated that he really believed he had enough time to get across. A similar event killed another driver in a Tesla in 2016. In that earlier incident, which also took place in Florida, the driver was also using the Autopilot feature when a semi tried to cross in front of his car. Autopilot did not stop the vehicle, and the driver died. Reports indicate that in the most recent crash, the trucker pulled into the road four and a half seconds prior to impact. The Tesla, which was traveling at about 70 miles per hour, did not slow down or stop prior to the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board report stated that sensors in the Tesla did not detect the driver’s hands on the steering wheel 7.7 seconds before the crash.
