February 14, 2020

MIAMI-DADE, FL- writes that a bus in Miami-Dade struck a bus stop this week in the afternoon. Reports indicate that the crash occurred near Coral Way and Southwest 72nd Avenue.*

Buses are difficult to operate as they are large vehicles that must maneuver around crowded city streets. These vehicles also have large blind spots making it likely that the driver will be unable to see people near the bus. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), large vehicles like buses have blind spots on all four sides. The blind spots are especially challenging when the driver is attempting to turn, change lanes or back up.

It is important to give space to large vehicles such as buses and trucks. Pedestrians, other drivers, and cyclists should always remember that if they cannot see the driver in the rearview mirrors, then the driver cannot see them either.

While it is essential for drivers operating large trucks to cautious and on the lookout for people, other cars, and cyclists, it is also crucial for others to be extra cautious around large vehicles. Never walk on or near the road while distracted. Having earphones in or looking at a cellphone while walking is extremely dangerous. Remember always to follow traffic laws so that drivers can predict your actions.
