Woman Struck by Vehicle in Green Cove Springs, Florida

February 14, 2020

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL- writes that a woman suffered severe injuries when a car struck her on US 17 earlier this week. The victim, who is 43 years old, was transported to Orange Park Medical Center, where her condition was declared critical. Police have not yet released the woman’s identity.*

Reports indicate that the victim attempted to cross the northbound lanes near Harbor Road in the morning when a 47-year-old driver in a Nissan Versa collided with her. Police are still investigating the crash, and it does not appear that any charges have been filed against the driver at this time.

Pedestrian crashes are occurring with greater frequency. One of the likely causes is smartphone use. While no studies have stated definitively how many pedestrian crashes can be attributed to smartphones, the rise in smartphone ownership coincides with a higher pedestrian death toll around the country. In many cases, the issue is not only distracted drivers but also distracted pedestrians. People who are looking at their screen while walking may place themselves in dangerous situations or enter traffic unexpectedly. Of course, there are many issues that are leading to a higher number of pedestrians dying; one of the main ones is likely the prevalence of large vehicles. Large vehicles, such as SUVs, and new technology, such as smartphones, are both likely to remain popular throughout the nation. Any solution that aims to decrease the number of pedestrian fatalities in the country will likely need to work even with these challenges. One easy way to reduce fatal pedestrian incidents would be to lower speed limits.
