FedEx Van and Truck Collide in Tragic Fatal Crash County Road 241 in Alachua County, Florida
ALACHUA COUNTY, FL- Alligator.org writes that a man from Bronson died in a tragic collision early this week in Alachua County. The victim was hauling cement powder when he struck a FedEx van in the afternoon on County Road 241.*
Police reported that the victim, who was 58 years old, was traveling southbound when he struck the van, which was also driving south. The trucker died at the scene of the wreck. The 24-year-old driver operating the van suffered injuries in the crash. Reports indicate that the van sustained severe damage on its front end when the left side of the truck and the right front end of the van collided. The victim lost control over his semi, and it veered off the west side of the street. The trailer became detached from the cabin as the truck rolled over, finally coming to a rest on its left side. The roof of the cabin appeared caved in as a result of the impact. Responders had to extract the victim from the vehicle. It is not clear who owned the victim’s truck or which company he was working for at the time of his death. The location of the crash remained closed several hours while workers cleared the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation, which officials stated would require about 30 to 60 days to complete.
Large truck crashes increased in the United States in 2018. During the same time period, other types of wrecks dropped, largely thanks to improved vehicle technology. Crash avoidance systems are helping prevent many crashes from occurring. The same benefits are not yet being seen in large trucks.
