Man in Putnam County Charged with DUI After Crashing with Three Children in the Car
PUTNAM COUNTY, FL- Mycbs4.com writes that a man is facing criminal charges after causing a car accident while driving drunk with children in his vehicle. The suspect was arrested earlier this week after crashing into another car while attempting to make a left turn. Reports indicate that the 30-year-old man was traveling northbound on US 17 when he attempted to turn at County Road 308B. The front of the suspect’s car hit the front left side of the other vehicle.*
The other car sustained severe damage in the wreck. Officers say that the suspect had three children, ages four, ten, and twelve in the car during the late-night wreck. A 29-year-old woman was also in the vehicle.
Police arrested the driver and charged him with several drunk driving-related offenses, including DUI with serious bodily injury, an open container violation, and a violation for turning left when he did not have the right of way.
Sadly, drunk driving is often a contributing factor in car crashes that injure and kill children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drunk drivers cause about 29 fatalities every day. In 2016, 214 children ages fourteen and under died in crashes with alcohol-impaired motorists.
On average, between 2001 and 2010, about twenty percent of all children killed in car crashes died in incidents where alcohol was a factor. In the majority of those tragic crashes, 65 percent, the child was in the vehicle with the impaired driver. While motor vehicle collisions are one of the main causes of death for children, most of these accidents are preventable.
