Man Dies in Tragic Naples, Florida Car Crash

February 10, 2020

NAPLES, FL- writes that a man died in a car crash in Naples early this week. The victim was driving on Vanderbilt Beach Road when he drove onto a median and then collided with two other vehicles. Reports indicate that the victim, identified as a 71-year-old man, was driving westbound in the evening when his car left the roadway, crossed the concrete barrier, and collided with an eastbound vehicle. The 61-year-old woman driving the eastbound car suffered serious injuries in the wreck.*

Another eastbound car, driven by a 20-year-old man, struck the victim’s vehicle a second time. All of the drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Police do not think that alcohol was involved in the collision. The investigation is still underway. Responders closed the eastbound lanes of Vanderbilt Beach Road near the TGM Bermuda Island Apartments while they worked to clear the scene.

Florida is one of the most dangerous states for vehicle collisions. Studies indicate that Florida lacks many highway safety laws that could help to promote safer roadways. A report published in 2019 found that the Sunshine State has just five of the sixteen laws recommended for increasing vehicle travel safety. Floridians may not find the results surprising. The state also routinely ranks among the deadliest in the nation for traffic crash fatalities.

While the number of driver deaths has dropped in recent years, it is still performing poorly on a national level. With higher than average numbers of crash fatalities and the lowest number of insured drivers in the country, the state clearly has a lot of work to do to ensure all road users are protected.
