Driver in Bradenton Strikes and Kills Pedestrian in Tragic Hit-and-Run Collision

February 09, 2020

BRADENTON, FL- The writes that a driver struck and killed a man in Bradenton over the weekend. The motorist then fled the scene of the crash. The incident took place on Whitefield Avenue when the victim, a 28-year-old man, was walking in the eastbound lanes. Police say that the driver was traveling east and collided with the man.*

Reports indicate that the police believe the involved vehicle is a maroon-colored Ford SUV or pickup truck that would have been manufactured in any year between 1997 through 2003. Officers are requesting that anyone with information regarding the crash, please contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Crime Stoppers.

Hit-and-run collisions are more common in Florida than in most other parts of the country. A recent report found that Florida comes in third out of all states when it comes to places with the most hit-and-run motorists. Not only is fleeing the scene a criminal act, but it also increases the risks that a victim's injuries will be more severe or deadly.

Every year, there are around 685,000 hit-and-run collisions reported across the country. The last available numbers indicated that in 2016, more than 2,000 people died in these incidents. Between 2009 and 2016, the number of deadly hit-and-run accidents increased by a shocking 60 percent. Most of the victims are pedestrians and cyclists.

Sadly, many drivers choose to flee because they believe, correctly, that they can do so without being apprehended. Studies indicate that only around 50 percent of these motorists are ever caught. Many of these crashes occur at night, and about one-third of the victims were found to have elevated blood alcohol levels when they were struck.
