Crash in Publix Parking Lot Tragically Kills One in Pinellas County, Florida

February 10, 2020

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL- The writes that a man from Palm Harbor died after crashing his vehicle in a parking lot over the weekend. Reports indicate that the victim, a 37-year-old man, was in a Publix parking lot and traveling at a low speed when he began to suffer from a medical emergency. The victim lost control of the 2009 Lexus, and it traveled through the parking lot, over a curb and struck a sign and a palm tree. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Responders transported the man to the hospital, where he died a short while later.*

Medical emergencies may occur at any time. When a person suffers a medical emergency while driving a car, the consequences can be deadly for that person and for others on the roadway. While the prospect of suffering a heart attack or stroke while behind the wheel is frightening, it is important to note that only a very small percentage of collisions take place because a driver is suffering from a medical issue.

When a medical emergency does cause a collision, there is often a liability question. A driver who suffers a sudden stroke while driving will likely not be held liable for injuries he or she caused. However, if the driver knew that he or she was at risk or had even been told by a doctor not to drive, then the liability may still fall with that person.

While some crashes do occur because of medical problems, far more incidents are the result of a driver failing to pay attention to the road, driving drunk, speeding, or otherwise putting themselves and others at risk.
